The Lucky Ones (Kolkata)

Ollie Schnauer

In just the time frame of 2 days I was able to see both ends of the spectrum in terms of fortune of the people living in Future Hope.

Future Hope lightened the mood for me about people living in the chaotic city. We entered this fully civilised space to view an English play these kids had been learning. Their English was incredible. Our group sat for about 2 hours as these people of similar ages to us were able to coordinate word with actions in a foreign language. I was then further impressed when we visited the younger kids (aged 3 to 12 approximately) who had the ability to hold a long, in depth conversation and tell me different stories in English. Very impressive. It was clear to see that the kids were well educated and some had dreams to work in the business world, like myself.

In complete contrast to that, the following day we visited a slum community. 'A picture speaks 1000 words'. Walking through this horrific place proved to me that this saying is not true. I have seen photos of slums, but seeing it from my own two eyes told a different story. Toilet pipes just leading to a pile on the ground, kids swimming in beyond murky water, concrete blocks for houses, but miraculously smiles on faces. These smiles were the only thing keeping me together. The place is simply unimaginable.

  1. No matter the hour, to wake up and and check the blog - the quality of which is astounding - is the highlight of my every day.
Your analogy of "a picture speaks a 1000 words" leads me to think than not even a 1000 words will ever place us right there with you in India - we read, we imagine and we try to visualise - but this trip is true immersion - your experience within this group of fantastic lads will bind you together forever.
We knew before you left, that this tour was something very special - but what we are reading tells us that this experience beyond belief.
To Shane, Tom, Reuben and Mark we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
