Food

Lachie

I never thought I'd say this, but I actually want a salad. Proud of me mum? These last 2 weeks have been a journey in itself when it comes to food. More cookies consumed than the Cookie Monster, enough carbs to close the flood gates for multiple days and longer waits for food than that of a ride at Disney land. With 2 weeks still to go, it feels like an eternity until I can have some of my mums yummy food, and the thought of missing Christmas lunch is like taking a bone away from a dog.

From my time here in India I have observed a few things in relation to food that caught my eye. Firstly, many places bring out your food before your drink. It leaves me wondering how hard it can be to make a coffee here in India. Maybe they have to go chase the cows in the streets for the milk....? Some of the encounters I have had with cafes have left me watching them as if I'm watching a Bollywood movie without subtitles. One instance was at Costa Coffee the other night as we waited for our delayed train (typical  India). This place consisted of 2 staff, in which they would take an order each, go and make the order then deliver it to the customer. A process which made our group wait in line for 20 minutes. We were the only people in the cafe...

However it hasn't been all that bad. $1.50 for a kati roll (like naan) filled with egg, chicken and sauce is an absolute steal and takes no time at all. A popular favourite in Kolkata. Before our 23.5 hour bus trip, cookies were a welcome surprise when I discovered them in a corner store in Kolkata. Sadly, after the bus trip the last thing I want to touch is another pack of 20 cent digestive biscuits. And the highlight of the trip was today's lunch. As we walked there Tom said to us "all you can eat butter chicken." This seemed too good to be true. However this place didn't let us down, providing us with as much naan, rice and butter chicken as our bellies could fit. It even got the tick of approval from the butter chicken expert, Ollie Schnauer . Quoting "it's not quite Namaste express" but was a close 2nd.

I'm sure as these next 2 weeks fly by, there will be many more food experiences. However waking up on Christmas Day with the availability to buy chai and some train samosas will hit home and make me realise how special it is to fill your bellies with family on a day of celebration. Save some Xmas pies for when I return please mum.
